Biannual Vietnam Championship Dog Show was held on October 3 & 4 in Saigon
Saigon – The largest biannual dog show was held this past weekend showcasing the best of the best of dog breeds in Vietnam.
Professional dog breeders and their handlers arrived from many Asian countries such as Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia participating in the Vietnam Championship Dog Show in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th, 2015.
This two-day national dog show in Vietnam, hosted twice a year in the months of April and October, also represents the growing numbers of Vietnamese pet owners, as every year the event increases in media audience and attendance. Local dog owners are the largest group of the attendance as they bring along their own dogs to mingle and socialize with other dog owners and their dogs. This October’s show placed much more emphasis on dispensing pet care education and more fun activities for young and old dog owners.
On the business side there was a growing representation of pet food manufacturers with trade booths: Perfect Companion Vietnam (Thailand), Invivo (France / Vietnam), Royal Canin (France), ANF (USA) and Betagro (Thailand). Also in attendance were global Veterinarian Product Manufacturers Bayer and Merial, and from Vietnam Fay Pet Products, Bio Pharmachemie and Sunset JSC.
And especially noticeable this year was the growing size of representatives from the pet service industry of Vietnam from both individual professionals and companies representing Veterinarian clinics, dog groomers and trainers, other non-food pet supply representatives.
The crowning jewel and showcase of the national dog show in Vietnam, with their own ‘dog show ring’, is the National Specialty Dog Show of Phu Quoc Dog (CAC). This is an exhibition of the native Phu Quoc Ridgeback dog of Vietnam where they select the top three Phu Quoc Ridgeback dogs and their handlers / breeders. This ‘unofficial dog breed’ native to mostly the southern part of Vietnam is developing a national appreciation and interests from many passionate Vietnamese dog breeders and owners. This dog breed with a distinctive ridge along their backs (only two other breeds in the world have this ridge: Thai Ridgeback and the Rhodesian Ridgeback) is also considered a ‘rare breed’ where it is not known and rarely seen outside Vietnam.
In regards to pedigree dog judges there was a record 4 FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) All Breeds International Judges coming different parts of Asia and North America, along with 4 local Vietnamese VKA (Vietnam Kennel Association) Judges.
Overall the growth of this national dog show is a reminder of the growth of the pet industry in Vietnam. Since the very first official dog show was held in 2009 this dog showing venue has seen growth in many dimensions and international pet related companies should consider becoming involved as a sponsor to help further the growth and interest of this national dog show of Vietnam, and generally, in pet ownership in Vietnam.
